US Now Has Biggest COVID-19 Outbreak in the Entire World

The Covid-19 Delta Variant has fueled a summer infection spike that may constitute the 4th Wave. According to real-time statistics collected by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, over 610,000 Americans have perished with COVID-19. Many medical professionals across the globe believe this data is significantly undercounted.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis ridiculed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's new mask-wearing recommendation as he pledged not to impose additional lockdowns in the state.

The Republican, widely considered a top 2020 presidential contender, spoke at a conservative policy conference in Salt Lake City on Wednesday. DeSantis challenged the Biden administration's call for all Americans to wear face coverings in areas with high concentrations of new infections regardless of vaccination status.

Governor DeSantis is too busy running around the country preparing to run for President in 2024 to notice that the Covid-19 Delta variant infections are skyrocketing in his state. Much less take note of the numbers of those being hospitalized. The infection rate is growing so fast in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri and Arkansas that some experts are predicting 4,000 Americans a day will die by October.

Like the governors of the other hardest-hit states, DeSantis is refusing to impose mask mandates or require state employees to be vaccinated to work. Further, DeSantis refuses to allow private companies to require vaccinations for their employees or impose mask mandates. In short, given the highly infectious nature of the Covid-19 Delta variant, DeSantis is literally murdering citizens of Florida with his ignorant, stubborn refusal to recognize the lethal danger of the current outbreak sweeping through Florida and 49 other states.

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 57.6% of Americans ages 12 and up are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. In response to the low vaccination rate and the danger of the Delta variant, the CDC on Tuesday, citing new science on the transmissibility of the Delta variant, changed its mask guidance to now recommend everyone in areas with substantial or high levels of transmission -- vaccinated or not -- wear a face-covering in public, indoor settings.

DeSantis and other Republicans have taken particular issue with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's recommendation that children wear facial coverings before returning to school in the autumn.

On Wednesday, he said on Twitter…

"Forcing children to wear masks is terrible policy."  "Parents are in the best position to choose whether or not their children should wear a mask to school. Neither Washington officials nor local authorities should be allowed to overrule the choice of their children's parents."

This decision to reclassify mask guidance is being treated by most Republican governors, lawmakers, and right-wing pundits as a challenge to civil liberties instead of the extraordinary health emergency.

Total vaccination coverage in Florida is at 49 percent, with 57 percent of the population has gotten at least one dose of the vaccine.

The State of Florida has seen a 124 percent rise in cases, a 123 percent increase in hospitalizations, and a 44 percent increase in virus-related fatalities during the past two weeks. Today, a request was made from a Jacksonville doctor calling on DeSantis to declare a state of emergency due to COVID hospitalizations.

Hey Governor, how's the weather in Utah?
