The Week Ahead: State Of The Union

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 100, NASDAQ 100 and Russell 2000 were higher for the fourth week in a row. Expect no down weeks for 2018. The Big Picture [monthly bias] for the NASDAQ 100, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, Russell 2000 and the S&P 100 remain positive.

1.Geopolitical and Fiscal Events. Tuesday sees President Trump deliver the State of The Union Address. Wednesday sees the FOMC announce its latest interest rate announcement. Wednesday also sees the BOJ release its latest monetary policy meeting.

2.Economic Releases. Releases of note this week and next include the weekly chain store sales, oil/gas numbers, mortgage applications, jobless claims and personal income, consumer confidence, Chicago PMI, construction spending, nonfarm payrolls, unemployment rate, factory orders and Michigan Sentiment.

3.Earnings Releases. Notable releases next week include LMT D PFE MCD MSFT FB AAPL GOOGL XOM CVX.

Monday, January 29

December Personal Income is released at 8:30 a.m. EST and is expected to remain at 0.3%.

Tuesday, January 30

The January Consumer Confidence is released at 10:00 a.m. EST and is expected to stay at 122.10.

President Trump delivers The State of the Union at 9:00 p.m. EST.

Wednesday, January 31

January Chicago PMI is due out at 9:45 a.m. EST and is expected to drop to 63.9 from 67.6.

The Federal Reserve Open Market Committee (FOMC) is out with its latest decision at 2:00 p.m. EST.

The Bank of Japan (BOJ) releases notes from its latest meeting.

Thursday, February 1

At 10:00 a.m. EST, the December Construction Spending is due out and expected to fall to 0.35% from 0.8%.

Friday, February 26

January Nonfarm Payrolls are due out at 8:30 a.m. EST and are expected to rise to 170,000 from 148,000. The unemployment rate is expected to stay at 4.1%.

December Factory Orders are due out at 10:00 a.m. EST and is expected to fall to 0.8% from 1.3%.

January Michigan Sentiment is due out also at 10:00 a.m. EST and is expected to rise to 95 from 94.4.
