The Week Ahead: May 13 To 17th

The NASDAQ 100 was lower as were the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 100 and Russell 2000.

1.Geopolitical and Fiscal Events. Monday sees Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for talks with Russians on Syria and Venezuela. Special Prosecutor Mueller may appear before the House on Wednesday.

2.Economic Releases. Releases of note this week and next include the weekly chain store sales, oil/gas numbers, mortgage applications and jobless claims as well as NFIB Small Business Optimism Index, Retail Sales, Empire Manufacturing, Industrial Production, Housing Starts, Philadelphia Fed Index, Leading Indicators and University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Survey.

3.Earnings Releases. Notable releases this upcoming week include TME TTWO A RL BABA CSCO WMT NVDA BIDU AMAT DE.

Monday, May 13

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo heads to Brussels then on to Russia to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov on Venezuela and Syria.

Tuesday, May 14

April NFIB Small Business Optimism Index is due out at 6:00 a.m. EDT and last month came in at 101.80.

Wednesday, May 15

April Retail Sales is due out at 8:30 a.m. EDT and is expected to fall to 0.2% from 1.6%.

May Empire Manufacturing is also due out at 8:30 a.m. EDT and is expected to fall to 7.7 from 10.1.

April Industrial Production is due out at 9:15 a.m. EDT and is expected to improve to 0.1% from -0.1%.

Special Prosecutor John Mueller may appear before a House Committee to discuss his report.

Thursday, May 16

April Housing Starts are due out at 8:30 a.m. EDT and is expected to rise to 1,200,000 from 1,139,000.

May Philadelphia Fed Index is due out at 8:30 a.m. EDT and is expected to fall to 7.5 from 8.5.

Friday, May 17

April Leading Indicators are due out at 10:00 a.m. EDT and expected to fall to 0.2% from 0.4%.

May University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Survey is due out at 10:00 a.m. EDT and is expected to fall to 96.9 from 97.2.

Saturday is the deadline for President Trump to decide about Auto Tariffs, note this could be pushed back.

OPEC meets on Sunday with quotas to be discussed.
