The Week Ahead As We Enter 2017

1. Geopolitical Events. On Tuesday Congress will return. On Wednesday FOMC minutes will be released.

2. Economic Releases. Releases of note this week include the weekly chain store sales, oil/gas numbers, mortgage applications, jobless claims and construction spending, ISM Manufacturing PMI, monthly payroll numbers and factory orders.

3. Earnings Releases. Notable releases include UNF SONC WBA MON STZ AZZ GBX.

Monday, January 2:

Many global markets and U.S. markets are closed for New Year’s Day Observances.

Tuesday, January 3:

The U.S. Congress returns to Washington. Expect an active transition from President Obama to President Elect Trump.

November Construction Spending is due out at10:00 a.m. EST and is expected to remain at 0.50%.

December ISM Manufacturing PMI is due out at 10:00 a.m. EST and is expected to rise to 54 from 53.2.

Wednesday, January 4:

The Federal Reserve Open Market Committee (FOMC) releases its latest minutes from the December meeting.

Ford (F) hosts their monthly sales call.

Thursday, January 5:

No events of note.

Friday, January 6:

December Nonfarm Payroll is due out at 8:30 a.m. EST and is expected to come in at 172,500 from 178,000. The unemployment rate is expected to increase to 4.7% from 4.6%.

November Factory Orders are due out at 10:00 a.m. EST and are expected to fall to -2.2% from 2.7%.

Biogen (BIIB) holds its analyst day.
