Wall Street and financial markets close another week hanging on to these ridiculous valuations – near or higher than the pre-pandemic levels of February. It’s as if the world’s financial markets are in total denial of the nightmare financial scenario we are facing.
I’m not talking about the current surge sweeping through the Sunbelt in our country or the 28 states seeing infection and death rates surging. I’m talking the nasty, deadly second wave we’re going to suffer here in the United States as we move from summer into the fall.
Bloomberg features an introduction Saturday of Klaus Stohr, a key player in 2003 who worked for World Health Organization investigation that swiftly identified a coronavirus as the cause of SARS.
Stohr also sounded the alarm on the pandemic potential of avian flu, bringing countries and companies to the table to increase the production of vaccines in case it began spreading widely in people.
Stohr has been urging governments for many years to prepare for the grim possibility of a pandemic like COVID-19.
Stohr left the WHO to join drugmaker Novartis AG in 2007 and retired a couple of years ago, paints a sobering picture about the enormous danger the world is facing. He spoke with Bloomberg’s James Paton by phone, and his remarks have been edited for clarity and readability, and the interview is a must-read.
If Stohr is right, we’re not going to see this pandemic get better here in the United States, and around the world, we’re going to see it explode and put billions of people’s lives in danger.
“It’s not the vaccine that’s going to end the pandemic. The virus will end this pandemic by burning every piece of dry wood it will find” -- Klaus Stohr
“We cannot do the ostrich policy here and hope that some miracle will happen and the virus will disappear. The perfect strategy isn’t available.” -- Klaus Stohr
