Sen. Manchin Will Vote FOR Biden’s $1.9T COVID-19 Bill

President Biden has all the votes now to push through his $1.9 billion COVID-19 Stimulus and Relief Package. Minor adjustments in the eligibility requirements for the $1,400 checks, the addition of PPP monies for small businesses and a compromise on the minimum wage will make it impossible for Republican lawmakers in Congress to stop the passage of this critical legislation through the reconciliation process.
For those Republican lawmakers in Congress counting on Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) to stand in the way of President Biden’s proposed $1.9 Trillion COVID-19 relief bill and stimulus bill, today was their Waterloo.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA.) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY.) on Monday introduced a budget resolution bill that would allow them to pass President Biden’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus stimulus with just a simple majority in both chambers. On Tuesday, they got the final vote they needed to lock up that majority.
West Virginia’s Senior Senator is on board and will support the legislation with minor changes adding more PPP money for small businesses. In short, the two-hour meeting between 10 Republican Senators and President Biden yesterday showed the two sides are so far apart that the Biden Administration and Democrat lawmakers will go ahead and pass the legislation during the reconciliation process. The platform presented by the Republican committee presented Biden with a $618 billion stimulus proposal on Monday that includes smaller stimulus checks and leaves out local government funding. That proposal was listened to by President Biden but was short-lived.
This will force some of the 50 Republican U.S. Senators to vote for the bill instead of demanding changes that reduce the price tag and perhaps make requests to add to the $1.9 Trillion packages.
Manchin’s decision came in a statement today….
“I will vote to move forward with the budget process because we must address the urgency of the COVID-19 crisis.”
“But let me be clear -- and these are words I shared with President Biden -- our focus must be targeted on the COVID-19 crisis and Americans who the pandemic has most impacted.”
“I will only support proposals that will get us through and end the pain of the pandemic.”
“For the sake of the country, we must work together with laser focus to defeat the COVID-19 crisis, support our neighbors and communities who continue to suffer and get back to a more normal life as quickly as possible.”
