Ron DeSantis Deploys His Censorship Army Into Schools, Making 1984 Life a Reality

Your Kind is Extinct (1984)

The Party controls every aspect of life in Oceania and has successfully indoctrinated the populace into mindless submission to Big Brother. The Party's slogans mirror the doublespeak found within its rhetoric: "War is peace," "Freedom is enslavement," and "Ignorance is power." Newspeak is a fabricated language developed by the Party to stifle critical thinking and advance Party ideology. The Thought Police and constant monitoring help the Party keep its grip on power… George Orwell "1984"

"Big Brother is watching you."  The Thought Police can monitor the behavior of all residents thanks to secret equipment placed in every home. The most visible evidence of his domination is Oceania's never-ending, cruel wars, propagandistic language (Newspeak), and Anti-Sex League.

Winston Smith, the novel's protagonist, is a low-level party official in post-World War II London. His role as a member of the Outer Party at the Ministry of Truth is to rewrite history to fit with the Party's present ideology. But Winston's desire for honesty and morality drives him to act in covert opposition against the government.

According to media accounts, some school district officials have been hurrying to comply with new state standards announced earlier this month. The state's GOP governor, Ron DeSantis, championed HB 1467, which was signed in March, compels teachers to remove books that do not appear on the state-approved reading list, at least until an employee with a media expert credential evaluates them.

Books with explicit content, especially pornographic material, are now forbidden in schools under the new regulation.

If non-sanctioned books are discovered on a classroom's shelves, instructors might face criminal charges under the "curriculum transparency" statute. Parents may also file a complaint if they believe a book is inappropriate for their children.

The state's new standards do not include a list of particular books but rather define content that should be deemed explicit and other prohibited material.

Florida governor and self-proclaimed "anti-book snob" Ron DeSantis is trying to remove as many books as possible from the shelves of high school and college students throughout the state. In truth, Florida Republicans are ramping up their war on reading, with the GOP launching a full-scale gaslighting operation to deny what is a campaign of threats and intimidation against teachers to prevent pupils from reading.

A report released by the investigative journalism team at Popular Info last week revealed that teachers in the state of Florida are being instructed to lock away their classroom libraries or face the possibility of criminal prosecution. The reports of youngsters screaming and images of bookcases being moved behind barricades immediately spread over the internet. That was the moment when the gaslighting started.

The majority of works that "woke busters" find offensive are authored by authors of color who are women.

Manny Diaz Jr., DeSantis' lieutenant, and the Florida Commissioner of Education referred to the report as "false news" and accused the instructors of going beyond with their reaction. However, as Judd Legum of Popular Info confirmed in a follow-up report, "Diaz's recommendations to teachers directly contradict the training produced by his own agency." This training mandates that all books be prescreened and warns that censors must "err on the side of caution" when determining whether or not a book fits the extremely conservative definition of "harmful to minors."

Toni Morrison, the winner of the Pulitzer Prize, is one author whom Republican censors have regularly targeted. This makes it plain that the issue at hand is not "pornography," which no one genuinely believes instructors were delivering, but rather globally recognized literature. That's why the Republican Party has a long history of trying to restrict access to literature on the Holocaust and Martin Luther King Jr.

The state has published new rules. Although they do not include a list of particular books, they describe the types of content that should be deemed explicit and other illegal content.

One of the numerous criticisms leveled at this law is the possibility that the criteria may be used to remove homosexual content from bookshelves, an argument made by LGBTQ rights organizations. A further worry voiced by critics was that the ban might be used to suppress literature about minority subjects like black history and racial equality.

Orwell wrote Nineteen Eighty-four warning about the dangers of Nazism and Stalinism. A frightening warning of the dangers of unaccountable regimes, the book portrays a state where those who dare to think differently are punished with torture, where individuals are watched 24 hours a day, and where party indoctrination rules free speech and thinking. For many, Winston's failure serves as a sobering reminder of the fragility of civilized principles in the face of tyrannical regimes.

No man is an island,

Entire of itself.

Each is a piece of the continent,

A part of the main.

If a clod be washed away by the sea,

Europe is the less.

As well as if a promontory were.

As well as if a manor of thine own

Or of thine friend's were.

Each man's death diminishes me,

For I am involved in mankind.

Therefore, send not to know

For whom the bell tolls,

It tolls for thee.

All life is interdependent, and this poem is a gentle reminder to treat each individual with dignity and respect. This stanza stresses the need to remember and appreciate our common humanity. It serves as a sobering reminder that we are all interconnected and that our indifference to the pain of others is selfish. If not, history proves another Big Brother is stalking in the shadows to force their will on all.
