President Trump Continues Gaslighting America on the Number of Expected COVID-19 Deaths

Just three weeks ago, President Trump was insisting the number of COVID-19 fatalities could be as low as 50,000 to 65,000. Last night he suggested 100,000, 95,000 or 90,000.  It’s another outright intentional lie. A fabrication delivered by our President at the foot of the Lincoln memorial statue, one of our nation’s greatest presidents.

President Trump’s nonstop lying reminds me of a family friend I had growing up who was, in every sense, an adoptive uncle. I called him Uncle Buster, and he was no stranger to hard times, growing up in an orphanage during the 1930’s depression with my father, his sister, my uncle Henry and his siblings.

Uncle Buster sat down many times and taught me how to read not only the sports pages but also the financial section of The New York Times and Wall Street Journal to understand how the U.S. economy was trending.

During those lessons, we would sometimes deviate to life lessons. I loved it when that would happen because he would often tell a great story, a parable to make his point. He once explained that gaslighting to me with a story about two neighbors and a cat owned by one of them…

“Two next-door neighbors are good enough friends to often look out for one another in different ways. One of them, the cat owner, loves the feline-like it’s their child.  The neighbor is invited for an all-expense-paid work vacation in Hawaii by his boss. He asks his neighbor to watch, feed, and care for his cat while he and his wife go on the trip.”

“On the fourth day caring for the cat, the neighbor goes out the door to fetch his morning paper at his curb, and the cat suddenly bolts out the door, and gets to the man’s horror gets run down by a milk truck. The owner of the cat calls almost every day to check on his cat.

“The neighbor reasons that if he tells the cat owner about the accident, he will ruin the cat owner’s trip to Hawaii, so when he calls, he tells him the cat is doing great for few days.

“Four days before the end of the cat owner’s trip, when the owner calls, the neighbor tells him the cat is fine, but he got out and climbed into a tree. Please don’t worry. If I can’t coax him down by tomorrow, I’ll call the fire department for help.

“When the cat owner calls his neighbor, he is told that while rescuing the cat, it fell from the tree, and he was taken to a local vet for care and is doing just fine. He’ll be back in the neighbor's care by the time the owner comes back home from his trip. Don’t worry.

The next to last day of the cat owners trip his cat sitter tells him that the cat passed away, he must have sustained a concussion from the fall, and the vet said there was nothing they could do. The cat passed away. Uncle Buster then explained that was gaslighting someone with a good intention. The cat sitter didn’t want the cat owners Hawaii's work/vacation ruined.”

President Trump’s gaslighting has no good intention. The President knows at the current rate of deaths that there will be 80,000 deaths in the next 6 to 8 days and over 100,000 deaths by the end of May. The President has been briefed about a new University of Pennsylvania study and model that concludes that by reopening the country now, there could be as many as 350,000 COVID-19 deaths by the end of June.

Even in the best-case scenario with 181 days before the election at 1,600 deaths a day, the total number of COVID-19 deaths could reach 358,000 deaths by Election Day, November 3, 2020.

My uncle Buster used to tell me that holding back bad news from people can really be a flawed strategy because if it looks like your covering up something, you did purposely. It’s much worse than just coming out at the beginning and admitting you screwed up. Because if people think you're scamming them with lies, the ramifications can be many times worse than just being honest.

Uncle Buster would call President Trump’s lies over the number of possible deaths gaslighting at its worst.

Trump is claiming he has been treated worse than President Lincoln,  while saying that the 60,000 to 70,000 fatalities he estimated during an April 27 press conference will probably be closer to “100,000, or 90,000 or 95.000” and saying its “it’s all working out.”  Yet, behind the scenes, he and his administration is preparing for many more American fatalities in less than a month, according to a report from the New York Times...

“Projections from an internal report show that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention forecasts about 200,000 new cases each day by the end of the month.”

This proves President Trump just can’t bring himself to tell the American people the truth about anything. From the number of people attending his inaugural right through and after his impeachment, he has lied about everything he’s told the American people.

Projections come from a model crafted by the CDC and FEMA that anticipates a 25,000-person increase in daily infections. According to The New York Times…

“The numbers underscore a sobering reality: While the United States has been hunkered down for the past seven weeks, not much has changed. And the reopening to the economy will make matters worse.”

Now the President and his sycophants are telling Americans that the coronavirus originated at a Chinese laboratory in Wuhan; after telling the American public for months, it didn’t and lauding Chinese efforts to eradicate the virus. Meanwhile, the U.S. military and intelligence services have been reporting that coronavirus was not engineered in a laboratory.

How can anyone believe what President Trump says, especially when he appears to be pounding the drum in preparation for some sort of massive retaliation against the Chinese government to push the blame for his incompetent, lazy response to the pandemic? He’s Has also been lying about the coronavirus testing availability for months and lied about being cleared by the Republican-controlled Senate that has issued three different reports that show he did receive help from the Putin and Russian government to be elected in 2016. And, etc.… His Presidency has been a disaster for the American people.
