Latest Short Interest Data For NYSE and NASDAQ Through The End of August

We have the latest short interest data as you consider the current market volatility and what is means for shorts. Short interest numbers for the NYSE are reported for the period of settlement date August 31st. Short interest numbers have decreased to 15,536,815,389 to 15,670,105,559 shares (revised) for a decrease of 133,290,170 shares or -0.85%. So we know shorts did not increase their bets.

There were 1219 (-141) increases and 1956 (+122) decreases and seen more advancers than decliners in 61 of the last 164 initial reporting periods. NYSE and NASDAQ overall short interest have risen in 39 of the last 90 reporting periods with short intensity remaining below average across the board.

Short interest numbers for NASDAQ are reported for the period of settlement date August 31st. Short interest numbers have decreased to 7,996,112,395 from 8,126,212,216 shares for a decrease of 130,099,821 shares or -1.60%.
There were 1040 (-86) advancers and 1600 (+74) decliners. NASDAQ has seen more advancers than decliners in 76 of the 164 last reporting periods.

Short covering is light and it will not bail out the market right now. Therefore, we would not be buying short squeezes until the shorts begin to feel some pain again.
