Germany Under COVID Seige Again!
The entire country of Germany is experiencing an outbreak.
In response to an increase in coronavirus infections, the director of Germany's disease control agency said on Friday that the country had entered a "nationwide state of emergency."
According to Lothar Wieler, the director of the Robert Koch Institute, regular medical treatment could no longer be assured in some areas of the nation due to overcrowding in hospitals and critical care units.
The German air force verified a report by the newspaper Bild that it was ready to assist patients in being transferred to facilities with open beds.
"Germany as a whole is seeing an epidemic," Wieler told reporters in Berlin.
"There is a national state of emergency in effect. We need to use the emergency brake immediately."
He urged for more steps to be taken immediately to combat the increase of COVID-19 cases, which reached 50,000 for the third day in a row.
The Robert Koch Institute also announced 201 more fatalities, bringing the total number of people who have died since the pandemic began to 98,739 people.
As Wieler's remarks were being made, the upper chamber of parliament adopted additional measures to limit the epidemic, presented by the center-left coalition that arose after the national election on September 26.
People will be required to prove that they have been vaccinated, that they have recently recovered from COVID-19, or that they have tested negative for the virus to get access to collaborative workspaces or public transportation.
Separately, departing German Chancellor Angela Merkel reached an agreement with the governors of the country's 16 states to establish a new threshold tied to the number of COVID-19 patients admitted to hospitals per 100,000 people during a seven-day period in a given year.
Medical workers and nursing facility employees, for example, are among the professional categories for whom obligatory vaccinations are being considered in several jurisdictions.
