Dr. Fauci Warns: 100,000 New Coronavirus Cases a Day

The consensus of Dr. Fauci and Dr. Redfield is that wearing a protective mask is extremely important if we are to contain COVID-19 and save lives.

Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, is likely going to get fired after today’s testimony before a Senate hearing if President Trump sticks to his past behavior. Fauci, considered by most physicians the top infectious disease expert in the United States, is warning in a massive increase of coronavirus infections…

“We are now having 40-plus thousand new cases a day,” Dr. Fauci said. “I would not be surprised if we go up to 100,000 a day if this does not turn around. And so I am very concerned.”

The current rate of infections in recent days has spiked to over 40,000 a day.  His prediction of 100,000 a day is based on the assumption that the country fails to contain the surge that is now underway.

Fauci reiterated a repeated position he has held from the beginning of the pandemic that wearing a mask is essential if we are to contain the coronavirus.

“We are all in this together,” he said, adding, “We recommend masks for everyone on the outside, anyone who comes into contact in a crowded area. You should avoid crowds where possible and when you’re outside and not have the capability of maintaining distance, you should wear a mask at all times.”

Dr. Redfield U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, appeared with Dr. Fauci, Dr. Stephen M. Hahn, the Food and Drug Administration Commissioner, and Adm. Brett P. Giroir, the Assistant Secretary for Health.

Dr. Fauci said that the federal government had a “community engagement program” embedded at the sites of vaccine trials to help build trust in them. Dr. Fauci went on to assert…

“It is a reality: a lack of trust of authority, a lack of trust in government, and a concern about vaccines in general,” He added that there need to be “boots on the ground,” especially near minority communities that he said, “have not always been treated fairly by the government.”

Fauci urged local politicians and school administrators should consider the virus activity in their localities when they draw up reopening plans for the fall.

Dr. Fauci, in his testimony, warned that if too few Americans agree to take a vaccine developed, we may never get rid of the virus. It could become “endemic.”

Dr. Redfield singled out younger Americans, in particular, to deliver a message that they are not exempt from the necessity of wearing a mask.

“It is critical that we all take the personal responsibility to slow the transmission of Covid-19 and embrace the universal use of face coverings,” he said. “Specifically, I’m addressing the younger members of our society, the Millennials and the Generation Zs — I ask those that are listening to spread the word.”

Dr. Stephen Hahn, said the FDA is taking action to help coronavirus vaccine developers get through the approval process faster.

“I am pleased to announce that today, FDA is taking action to aid the timely development of a safe and effective vaccine to prevent Covid-19 by guiding developers, with recommendations on the data needed to facilitate manufacturing, clinical development, and approval,” he said.

Hahn said the guidance would “provide regulatory clarity around what FDA expects concerning those data. We want to see certain parts of those data so that we can demonstrate to the world, to the nation, to the American people, that we are following our rigorous standards concerning safety and efficacy.”

“This is particularly as important as we know that some people are skeptical of vaccine development efforts,” he continued, adding that “public confidence in vaccines is so important.”

Bloomberg recently told its readers that…

“ Seven in 10 Americans have said they would get vaccines against the virus if immunizations were free and available to everyone, according to recent polling, a number that health officials fear may not be enough to achieve “herd immunity,” a term that signifies that a vast majority of a population has protection against infection. At least 70 percent will need to be immune to the virus to reach that point, according to researchers at Johns Hopkins University.”

100,000 cases a day with the same rate of hospitalization and mortality rate that has taken place so far in the United States could amount to over 2 million deaths in the next 12 months unless there’s a breakthrough in therapeutics that dramatically cuts the virus’ lethalness.  Wall Street and the rest of the world’s financial and commodities markets are not pricing in anything near to seeing 36 million cases of COVID-19 in the next 12 months.

“There’s a reckoning coming say’s Michael London of World Opportunity Investor. The March 23, 2020 lows seen in the market may well be seen again, as the market heads even lower.”

“We may be in a mini-dark age. We’ll see how the 31 states with sharply rising infections handle the chaos. Given President Trump’s incompetence, any national effort is likely to be too late and too little.”
