Better Get Used To This Term - Gain of Function
In 2020, we had to deal with Covid-19, think 1.0. Now in 2021, we are learning to deal with the Delta variant of Covid-19, think 2.0. Many are ignoring the potential for a repeat or worse of 2020. Here at Wall Street Rebel we do not.
Post any virus there is the potential for a variant to develop that is similar but different. Currently, that is what we are starting to live through. The real question is how bad will it get? It is too early to tell BUT we do know that cases are doubling each week for the past four weeks. 10,000 to 20,000. 20,000 to 40,000. And 40,000 to 80,000. Could we go to 160,000 this week?
We could. Why? One reason - "gain of function". This term means that virus mutates and develops a new molecular function or pattern of gene expression. Covid-19 1.0 had a Rnaut of 1.5 to 6.5. The Rnaut is the number of people the infected person will infect. The Delta Variant is thought to have a Rnaut of 9. However, recently in recent cases we have seen the Rnaut exceed 14.
Pay attention when you hear "gain of function".
